[REVIEW:] Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 digital camera review – Gavin Stoker (Pocket-lint)

Posted on Thursday, May 20, 2010 in Cameras, Reviews

On first glance the 10.2 effective megapixel resolution DSC-TX5 seems a modest addition to Sony’s Cyber-shot series. Like the other credit-card sized models in the same range it resembles a cigarette case or makeup compact with its slender depth and shiny-mirrored metal fascia. The top half again slides down and opens to reveal lens and integral flash, activating the camera as the user performs this task. So taking a picture with the TX5 is pretty much as easy as taking one with a camera phone. — Gavin Stoker

Sony announced last week that its new NEX series of compact, interchangeable lens cameras — composed of the flagship NEX-5 ($800) and slightly cheaper NEX-3 ($700) — will arrive in July.

Panasonic and Olympus have been cultivating the market for small cameras with swappable glass for nearly two years with models such as the Pen EPL-1 and the Lumix DMC-GF1C, both of which employ the micro four-thirds system, a relatively new standard for image sensors and lenses that falls somewhere between point-and-shoot and digital single-lens reflex cameras. — Chad Sapieha

In a little under two years, interchangeable lens compact cameras have gone from an intriguing idea to an accepted and integral segment of the digital camera market. Micro Four-Thirds pioneers Panasonic might have kicked it off with the relatively conservative, DSLR-inspired DMC-G1, but it wasn’t long before we saw the true potential of the concept explored in more innovative ways in the small and stylish GF1, and Olympus’s E-P1 and E-P2. More recently, Samsung joined the party with the NX10 – the first camera of this type to feature an APS-C format sensor. — Barnaby Britton

So Sony gave me a review unit of the Sony NEX-3 three days, explaining that they were so fearful of leaks that a Sony person would collect it from me when my time was up: “Can’t trust couriers — they’ve been known to open up boxes and leak the info to competitors!”

In the last six months it has been apparent that the Micro Four Thirds cameras have won great appeal in the market. Buyers have warmed to the smaller (than DSLR) form factor, light weight and interchangeable lens factor. And the price! — Barrie Smith

The TX7 is small and slim, measuring 3.9 x 2.4 x 0.7 inches and weighs 5.3 ounces, including the battery and memory stick. It features Sony’s 1/2.4 inch, 10.2 megapixel EXMOR R CMOS sensor, designed for superior low light performance, and a very wide angle lens (25mm, 35mm equivalent) with 4x optical zoom that uses folded optics so it does not protrude from the camera body. — Andy Stanton
