[REVIEW:] Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II LD [IF] Asph. VC macro – photozone

Posted on Monday, May 10, 2010 in Lenses, Reviews

There’s not only a mega-pixel war out there, we’re also seeing a race for the highest zoom ratio in lens land. Tamron has always been at the forefront of providing extreme range zoom lenses. The relatively new Tamron 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 does already provide a class-leading performance (class-leading = “good”) but it falls a little short in one important aspect: it may provide the highest zoom ratio (13.9x) of the industry combined with decent quality but it does not offer any optical image stabilization. — photozone.de

[REVIEW:] Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L II USM Lens Review – The-Digital-Picture

Posted on Saturday, May 8, 2010 in Lenses, Reviews

It takes a lot of glass to be that fast – and it sure looks nice. It is especially attractive with that red ring around the end of it. :)

The biggest downside to the original Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L USM Lens was the very slow focusing speed. If you were shooting portraits, it didn’t matter. But, a lens this fast begs to be used for indoor action sports. — The-Digital-Picture

[REVIEW:] Review of Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II Lens and Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 Lens – W.L. Castleman

Posted on Saturday, May 8, 2010 in Lenses, Reviews

I could have given this review the title, “In Praise of the EF 85mm f/1.8 Lens.” It does almost everything that the EF 85mm f/1.2 L does faster, cheaper, lighter and smaller. There are a few notable exceptions. The 1.2L lens gathers more light, and it produces outstanding diffuse background blur (bokeh) and an associated exceedingly narrow plane of focus that can produce a unique look that is very attractive for portraits and useful in many indoor sports/action photography applications. However, unless you have a need to shoot at apertures wider than f/2 (f/1.4 or f/1.2) and/or are a portrait photographer, the EF 85mm f/1.8 lens will meet almost all of your needs for a fast 85mm lens. — W.L. Castleman

[REVIEW:] Lensbaby Composer Lens – thecounsel (Photography Review)

Posted on Thursday, May 6, 2010 in Lenses, Reviews

I’m not sure how I got turned on to the lensbaby, but the more images I saw that one was used with, the more I wanted one. Probably the most elemental feature of the Composer, and all newer models is the optic swap system, as these have a significant amount of influence over your final image beyond the selective focus. I personally have the double glass, single glass, and plastic optics. All have their place, but I think the single glass is my favorite as you get some softness, and some chromatic aberrations (the kind you want). — thecounsel

[REVIEW:] Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM Interchangeable Lens Review – Gary Wolstenholme (ePHOTOzine)

Posted on Friday, April 30, 2010 in Lenses, Reviews
Viewed 128 times

Designed for use with DSLRs fitted with sensors smaller than 35mm, such as Canon’s EF-S compatible cameras, Nikon’s DX format and Sony or Pentax digital SLRs, this update to Sigma’s incredibly popular 10-20mm lens range offers an equivalent angle of view to a 15-30mm lens on a full frame camera. Olympus and Panasonic users can also purchase a version compatible with Four Thirds format SLRs where this lens will provide an equivalent angle of view of a 20-40mm lens. This updated version costs around £440 and offers a faster constant maximum aperture than its predecessor, which is still available for around £400. Both lenses use Sigma’s Hyper Sonic Motor to achieve autofocus. — Gary Wolstenholme

[REVIEW:] The Sigma 8mm Fisheye Lens – Andre Gunther

Posted on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 in Lenses, Reviews

I am addicted to wide-angle photography, its creative challenges and opportunities. Wide-angle lenses require rethinking your composition constantly. Eliminating clutter with a normal lens usually entails leaving it out of your frame, thus simplifying your composition. This is rarely possible with wide-angle lenses. Instead, you take advantage of their perspective, making distant objects very small. Eliminating clutter thus, requires moving around and changing your composition continually. — Andre Gunther

The Sigma company in its lineup undoubtedly presents its customers with a very wide choice of macro lenses. This Nikon 24mm f/1.4 is the world’s best wide f/1.4 lens.

The Nikon 24mm f/1.4 AF-S is a spectacular lens for FX, DX and 35mm film. It’s bright, sharp and contrasty at every aperture from edge-to-edge, with a minimum of distortion and coma, and no ghosting of which to speak. — Ken Rockwell
