South African photography is hot — at least, in the United States. This summer, not one but two New York museums have mounted major exhibitions of works by South African photographers. A monumental David Goldblatt exhibition is on view at the Jewish Museum, while a smaller Zwelethu Mthethwa show is at the Studio Museum in Harlem. In August, Darkroom: Photography and New Media in South Africa Since 1950, will open at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, in Richmond. — John Edwin Mason

When reviewing a technical book, one always has to keep the skill levels of the reader in mind. Frequently, the purchase of a new camera also involves an outlay for another manual aside from the one supplied with the camera. [REVIEW:] David Busch’s Canon Powershot G10/G11: Guide to Digital Photography – Conrad J. Obregon (Photofocus)

Both for people interested in moving up to a camera that gives them more control than a point-and-shoot camera and for serious photographers interested in finding a more convenient walk-around camera than a digital single lens reflex camera, the Canon G10 and G11 (the cameras are quite similar) offer attractive options. Unfortunately, making the switch to a new set of controls and menus can be quite painful, especially given the instruction manuals that come with these cameras, because the manuals are amongst the most poorly organized of those for electronic devices. David Busch’s Canon Powershot G10/G11: Guide to Digital Photography tries to make it easier for G10/G11 users to understand how to control the camera. — Conrad J. Obregon

Over the past few years, I have given much praise to Bryan Peterson’s book, Understanding Exposure, as a practical resource for anyone looking to get more out of his or her camera. It is, in my opinion, the best book for anyone new to DSLRs. In the same vein, I can highly recommend Peterson’s new book, Understanding Photography Field Guide. — Eric Reagan

[REVIEW:] Sylvia Wolf’s “The Digital Eye” surveys art photography in the age of Photoshop – Jay Gabler (Daily Planet)

An often-cited but just as often ignored principle of science is that when conducting an investigation, a null result—in which the experimental treatment brings about no change—is just as meaningful as a positive or negative result. Thus, it’s not necessarily a bad thing to say that The Digital Eye, Sylvia Wolf’s new book on digital photography in the fine-art tradition, is the critical equivalent of a null result. — Jay Gabler
