[REVIEW:] Canon Pixma Pro9000 Mark II – Eolake Stobblehouse

Dude, my new printer is outstanding. Just for fun I tried to print one of those fractal Mandelbrot images, and the printer beat my expectations in: 1) speed (less than two minutes for a full A3), 2) quietness (I could barely hear it working in the next room), 3) sharpness, and 4) colors. The details and color just pop. Awesome for home-made posters.   — Eolake Stobblehouse

[REVIEW:] eBook Review: The Essential Guide to Portrait Photography – Brian Auer (Epic Edits)

Posted on Sunday, November 29, 2009 in Books, Reviews

In my opinion, portraits can be the most interesting photos and they seem to naturally draw our attention. Why? I think we’re programmed to enjoy looking at photos of other people. Every person is different and we’re naturally curious about those we see in photos. In fact, I’ve often thought that the most important element of a photo is the human element.   — Brian Auer

[REVIEW:] Book Review: Live, Laugh, Celebrate – Brian Auer (Epic Edits)

Before reading this book, I hadn’t really thought about one of the things that separates us from all other species: we celebrate! Birth, birthday, graduation, victory, rite of passage, holiday, and many other events are celebrated by people all over the world each and every day. Some celebrations are very public gatherings, while others are private among friends and family. But whatever the reason, almost every culture celebrates something at some point.   — Brian Auer

[REVIEW:] Canon PowerShot S90 and Panasonic Lumix GF1: Foliage Fight! – Brad Soo (DP Interface)

Posted on Tuesday, November 24, 2009 in Cameras, Reviews
Viewed 10 times

I’ve decided to post some sample photos from the Canon PowerShot S90 and Panasonic Lumix GF1 cameras, since I had both with me today. I hope no one thinks this is a true, head-to-head fight: It’s NOT; the compact Canon S90 and entry-level SLR-class Panasonic GF1 are two completely different animals.

The Canon PowerShot S90 has the advantage of being small and light (it’s about the same size as an old Digital IXUS/ELPH I have), with dual control dials; while the Panasonic Lumix GF1 has a big image sensor and lens interchangeability. But both have full manual controls, produce 4:3 ratio photos and, after my mathematical calculations, bundled lens/resolution combinations that could offset each other to produce similar sized crops without resizing.   — Brad Soo

[REVIEW:] Sony a230 DSLR Digital Camera Review – Katrina Putker (Buy-n-Shoot)

Posted on Tuesday, November 24, 2009 in Cameras, Reviews

Sony’s Alpha 230 is one of the lowest priced entry-level digital SLRs on the current market (at RRP $949 for the single lens kit and $1,199 for the twin lens kit) and for those about to graduate to the DSLR realm, it may be an option to consider especially given its simple design and overall user-friendliness.

Whilst the differences between the a230 and its predecessor, the a200, seem fairly minimal minus some internal firmware adjustments and some external redesign, the a230 remains a good quality unit capable of producing pleasant images.   — Katrina Putker

Panasonic’s Lumix FZ35 is an advanced compact digital camera with mini DSLR-inspired stylings built into an ultra lightweight and highly portable unit that remains well priced for the bang it offers for some $769 bucks (RRP.)

With an impressive 18x optical zoom (equivalent to 27-486mm) the FZ35 is undoubtedly one of the best super zoom compacts currently available.   — Katrina Putker

[REVIEW:] Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens Review – The-Digital-Picture

Posted on Monday, November 23, 2009 in Lenses, Reviews

The Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens delivers top-tier image quality over an excellent general purpose focal length range in a nicely-sized/weighted/built body with great AF and an excellent implementation of Image Stabilization at a for-what-you-get great price. I’m impressed.

Like all Canon EF-S Lenses, the Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens mounts only to EF-S compatible Canon bodies – more specifically, only those with APS-C sized sensors. APS-C sensors have a FOVCF of 1.6x. Multiplying the 15-85’s focal length range by 1.6x shows that the 15-85 mounted on an APS-C body will deliver a 35mm angle of view equivalent of 24-136mm. This focal length range completely encompasses and extends what I consider the general purpose range.   — The-Digital-Picture

[REVIEW:] Book Review: 100 Ways to Take Better Nature & Wildlife Photographs – Paul Burwell (WildShots)

Posted on Sunday, November 22, 2009 in Books, Reviews

100ways I recently got my hands on a book called “100 Ways To Take Better Nature & Wildlife Photographs” by Guy Edwardes and published by David & Charles.  I’m a big believer in life-long learning and will readily devour any new information that I can get my hands on.

Although I believe the primary market for Guy’s book is a non-professional photographer, I almost always find a couple of tips in most books that either remind me of something I already knew but hadn’t used recently, or, and even better, I learn something new.   — Paul Burwell

bamboos With the advent of Windows 7, suddenly multi-touch devices are coming out left, right and centre, from monitors like the Dell SX2210T to the unique Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch tablet we’re reviewing today. This basically takes a traditional graphics tablet, which requires a pen to interact with, and adds touch technology so you can use your fingers as well. And given Wacom has an unmatched pedigree when it comes to creating tablets – its previous Intuos 4 Graphics Tablet scored a perfect 10 and grabbed an Editor’s Choice Award – we are expecting good things.   — Ardjuna Seghers

[REVIEW:] Book Review: Polar Obsession – Brian Auer (Epic Edits)

Posted on Thursday, November 19, 2009 in Books, Reviews
Viewed 10 times

Nature and wildlife photos are generally pleasing to the eye and viewed with great interest from the masses. The interest is even greater when the photos show remote locations and/or elusive animals that we typically don’t see in real life or in photos. Earth’s polar regions are perfect examples of such imagery.

Polar Obsession, by Paul Nicklen, is a stunning collection of photos from the northern and southern polar regions. But these are more than just pretty pictures of the landscape or some distant shots of animals through a 500mm lens — these are up close and intimate views of the animals, their behaviors, and the delicate environment they live in.    — Brian Auer
