“I’m of two minds about this book. If you are a casual shooter who takes pictures of family events and trips you might find this book useful. More serious photographers should look for something with more depth.” —  Conrad J. Obregon

[REVIEW:] Bento 3 – Michael Muchmore (PC Mag)

“Bento, Filemaker’s personal database software for the Mac, gets more useful with each release. Among the features in the version 3 are appealing new templates, integration with iPhoto, and improved sharing (though there’s still no way to send database files to other users). Users of Bento for iPhone can also now sync up with their desktop data. Bento 3 ($49 direct for the full version, $20 to upgrade) shows that the software is becoming a must for any Mac user who wants to organize just about anything. “ —  Michael Muchmore

[REVIEW:] OhGizmo! Review – AAXA Technologies P1 Pico Projector – Andrew Liszewski

Posted on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 in Accessories, Reviews

“When you think about it, a video projector small enough to fit in your hand is one of those ‘best of both worlds’ ideas. You get the portability of a device like the iPhone, with the big-screen viewing experience of a projector. And while micro projectors have been promised for the past few years, it’s only recently that we’ve begun to see affordable models hitting the market. Now prior to this review, the only experiences I’ve had with micro projectors was at trade shows where the lighting conditions were never ideal, and needless to say I wasn’t exactly impressed.” —  Andrew Liszewski

[REVIEW:] Juergen Teller's Paradis at Lehmann Maupin – Joerg Colberg

Posted on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 in Reviews
Viewed 11 times

“The press release of Juergen Teller’s current show at Lehmann Maupin states that the artist “removes the artifice between photographer and subject, leaving only the purity of each image, and unlike the sculptures in the museum’s [Musee du Louvre de Paris] collection, his photographs do not present a standard of beauty but are more akin to a tribute to women and the human form.” For those who haven’t seen the show, this “tribute to women”, which is not supposed to be presenting “a standard of beauty”, is achieved by having a model, Raquel Zimmermann, and an actress, Charlotte Rampling, walk around naked inside the Louvre (after hours) so that the photographer can take photographs of the women standing next to statues and paintings. Where to begin?” —  Joerg Colberg

[REVIEW:] Simon Johan's Until the Kingdom Comes at Yossi Milo Gallery – Joerg Colberg

Posted on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 in Reviews
Viewed 10 times

“Note to self: I shouldn’t read galleries’ press releases. I know, they’re written for a purpose, and that purpose is not to entice this blogger to come and visit the show, but still… I almost didn’t go to see Simen Johan’s Until the Kingdom Comes at Yossi Milo Gallery (on view until October 31, 2009). That would have been a tremendous shame since it turned out to be the benchmark contemporary photography show for this new season.” —  Joerg Colberg

[REVIEW:] Hardware Review: XRite Colorimeter – Jason Anderson (Canon Blogger)

Posted on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 in Accessories, Reviews
Viewed 10 times

“Eventually you knew it was coming – the subject of color management. Now before you mosey along, or your eyes glaze over, rest assured, this is not going to be the typical discussion of color management. I am not going to talk about LAB color vs CMYK, vs RGB, or anything like that. And even though the term “colorimeter” may sound like something Marvin the Martian was going to use to destroy Earth in the classic Bugs Bunny cartoon (that was the Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator), there is nothing overly scientific in today’s post.” —  Jason Anderson
