[REVIEW:] Lensbaby Composer Lets You Art Up Images Sans Photoshop – Daniel Dumas

Posted on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 in Lenses, Reviews

There are many options for adding effects to a photograph, but one way or another, they usually involve some sort of Photoshop-y sleight of hand. Not when you have a Lensbaby. These specially made DSLR lenses let you create pics with accouterments like selective focus or the rawness normally achieved with plastic Lomo cams. But first, take in some background courtesy of writer/ photographer Jackson Lynch: -Daniel Dumas

[REVIEW:] Canon Speedlite 270EX Review – Versatile, Compact Flash – Derrick Story (The Digital Story)

Posted on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 in Lighting, Reviews

The Canon Speedlite 270EX is a compact hot shoe flash that is an excellent accessory for modern Canon DSLRs and G series compacts. For this review I’ve tested the 270EX on a Rebel T1i and G9. Owners of older DSLRs, such as the Canon XT have reported that the flash works, but you can’t change some settings, such as switching from 1st curtain to 2nd curtain. -Derrick Story

[REVIEW:] HyperDrive Colorspace UDMA Photo Backup Review – Terry White

If you’ve ever been the victim of a corrupted or damaged memory card that resulted in the loss of photos, you know how important it is to backup. I always travel with a notebook computer even when I go on vacation. However, if I’m out shooting on location, I don’t carry my notebook with me. It’s usually left behind in the hotel. That being said, I have been a fan of having a backup device on location with me. -Terry White

[REVIEW:] Architectural Photography: Composition, Capture and Digital Image Processing

Posted on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 in Books, Reviews

Architectural photography is an area full of competing factors that affect the picture. Architects want their work reproduced accurately. Photographers want it presented in a photographically artistic manner. Wide angle lenses and telephoto lenses offer different results. Photographing from close to the building emphasizes different elements than photographing from a distance. Author Adrian Schulz recognizes all these countervailing forces and discusses each of them so that the reader can make the choices that will be in keeping with his of her vision. – Conrad J. Obregon

[REVIEW:] A Photographers Review: BlackRapid RS-5 Strap – Scott Wyden

Posted on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 in Accessories, Reviews
Viewed 20 times

I was excited to try the new BlackRapid strap because the first few versions caught my attention and the new RS-5 has a lot of storage built in. After few photowalks, gigs and various photo-ops using the RS-5 strap I decided to go back to my regular Think Tank camera strap. This is not to say the RS-5 isn’t built well because it is. The strap is strong and very impressive. My major concern is with the FastenR-2 slowly loosening. -Scott Wyden

[REVIEW:] Sensor-feed Live View in new Alpha 500 – Photoclub Alpha

Posted on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 in Cameras, Reviews

ACCORDING to specifications revealed on a German site, the new Sony Alpha 500 will have a 12.3 megapixel CMOS sensor capable of providing Live View to the rear 3 inch medium resolution screen – with Manual Focusing at 14X magnification. The in-prism based Quick AF Live View is retained, giving a choice between two entirely different systems of Live View, Sony’s innovative and easy solution scanning the focus screen, and a critically accurate alternative for tripod work. -Photoclub Alpha

[REVIEW:] Camera Review: Canon EOS 50D – Ian Plant (Mountain Trail)

Posted on Monday, August 24, 2009 in Cameras, Reviews

I’ve had Canon’s 50D for several months now—I bought it for shooting wildlife and as a back-up camera for landscapes—but I haven’t written a review. The reason, you ask? Frankly, I almost never use the camera. Once again, you ask: the reason? Well, truth be told, I guess I diverge from the majority of users who say positive things about this camera. Personally, I find it too noisy for demanding professional use. One is better off, in my opinion, with the 50D’s predecessor, the 40D. -Ian Plant
