[REVIEW:] Sony A850: affordable full-frame DSLR announced, reviewed 0 Michael R. Tomkins

The least expensive current full-frame DSLRs – Canon’s 5D Mark II, Nikon’s D700 and Sony’s own Alpha A900 – all bear price tags in the region of US$2,500+ body-only from reputable retailers. The Sony A850 will cost an impressive one quarter less than those cameras when it ships this October, priced at a much more attractive US$2,000. -Michael R. Tomkins

On the outside it’s just another standard-looking compact camera, available in black, red or silver.

On the inside, however, the Panasonic Lumix FX40, a step up from the company’s FX37 model, is packed full of excellent features. – Gavin Stoker

[REVIEW:] Camera phones that let you snap and gab – mysinchew.com

Posted on Thursday, August 27, 2009 in Cameras, Reviews

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Pretty much any cell phone you’d buy today comes with a digital camera, but only a few are good enough to take the place of even a cheap point-and-shoot.

It can be tricky to sniff out which phones really fall into that category. Highly advertised features, like a mass of megapixels and multiple settings, do not always add up to a solid camera. But after testing five devices from different manufacturers and wireless carriers, I can suggest some that prove it is indeed possible to get a good cell phone that also takes crystal-clear photos. -mysinchew.com

[REVIEW:] DPInterface Olympus Stylus Tough 6010 aka Mju Tough 6010 – Brad Soo (DP Interface)

The Olympus Stylus Tough 6010 is the 12 megapixel almost-identical twin of the Stylus Tough 6000 that I reviewed earlier this year. In addition to the up in megapixel count, the Stylus Tough 6010 also adds four Magic Filters (something like Art Filters on Olympus’ digital SLRs) and comes in three new colors. But other than that, everything else remains the same. -Brad Soo

[REVIEW:] Review-Ricoh GR Digital III – Carl Garrard (AlphaMountWorld)

Posted on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 in Cameras, Reviews

Is the Ricoh GR Digital III the best digital Ricoh Camera to date? This question almost immediatley popped into my mind while I handled the pre-production copy of the GR III, and the same question was repeated after using the final production version of this camera for this review. If you think the GR Digital III looks simliar to the camera it replaces, it does. From the front image of the GR Digital III it is hard to distinguish it from the GR Digital II it replaces, less one very important detail on the front of the lens housing- the 1:1.9 designation. -Carl Garrard

[REVIEW:] Canon PowerShot SD970 IS Digital – Jeff Keller (DCResource)

Posted on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 in Cameras, Reviews

The Canon PowerShot SD970 IS Digital ELPH ($379) is an ultra-compact camera with a 12 Megapixel CCD, 5X optical zoom lens (with image stabilization), high resolution 3-inch LCD, HD movie mode, HDMI output, and plenty of point-and-shoot features. The SD970 is the #2 camera in Canon’s ELPH lineup, with only the 14 Megapixel SD990 above it, though that camera was recently discontinued. -Jeff Keller

So, as everyone is likely already aware, Topaz Labs approached me recently to sponsor a giveaway and generously donated their entire suite for some lucky listener/reader. As is always the case, I like to say “thanks” in my own small way by giving the vendor some “air time” on the blog with a personalized review of whatever it is they are contributing. -Jason Anderson

Panasonic’s LUMIX DMC-ZR1 is a 12-megapixel compact camera that packs an 8x zoom into its small body. It runs rings around most compact cameras when it comes to reach, and it’s also capable of capturing very clear and well toned pictures. -Elias Plastiras

[REVIEW:] Olympus E-3 Digital SLR Review – Jack Neubart (photocrati)

Posted on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 in Cameras, Reviews

While it was fun to use, the Olympus E-620 did not leave a lasting impression. I needed to get back to my own DSLR system and do some serious shooting. Fast forward. Now the Olympus E-3 lands on my doorstep. Obviously not the newest camera in the Olympus Four Thirds DSLR camp, the pro-level E-3 certainly is the one that takes itself most soberly, as the flagship in the fleet. … Verdict: Buy it. If you don’t mind the smaller Four Thirds sensor or being limited by 10.1 MP resolution (little room to crop), this is definitely a camera to own and use. -Jack Neubart
